Madrid neighborhoods can be divided into three principal districts -- Old Madrid, which holds the most sites for tourists; the new district, often with the best shops and hotels; and the periphery, which is usually ignored by visitors. Some popular neighborhoods included in this program are Salamanca, Gran Via and Paseo del Prado. We combine an intensive Spanish course with activities to give you a comprehensive view of Madrid's neighborhoods and shops. Both the popular and traditional neighborhoods will be visited along with the most modern additions to Spanish arquitecture. A mix of history, the typical and the trendy.
Ever since Madrid's city walls came tumbling down in the 1860s, the district of Salamanca to the north, has been one of the most fashionable areas to live in Madrid. This is where all the most elegant shops are located.
Gran Via/Plaza De España is the city's main street, lined with cinemas, department stores, and the headquarters of banks and corporations. It ends at the Plaza de España, where bronze figures of Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, are set in a park beside a fountain overlooked by the stark 1950’s Torre España and Edificio Europa buildings.
The Paseo del Prado is the elegant final stretch leading from Cibeles down to Atocha. Tree shaded and maturely beautiful, it's home to such incomparable city gems as the Neptune statue, la Bolsa (Stock Exchange), Ritz hotel, Museo del Prado, and Botanical Gardens.
Madrid is without doubt one of the main centers for shopping in Spain and the numerous districts provide a shoppers' paradise. Whether you are looking for Spanish fashion, antiques, art or home accessories, rest assured that Madrid will provide you with a huge choice.
